AgroBiogel

Founded in 2021 and based in Tulln an der Donau, AgroBiogel GmbH is a spin-off of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). It focuses on the development and production of innovative and environmentally friendly solutions for forestry, agriculture, and substrates. With our product RETENTIS®, we are transforming water and nutrient storage in soils, setting new standards in both conventional and organic farming.

The creation of AgroBiogel and RETENTIS®

After years of development work, RETENTIS® has been produced on an industrial scale since 2024 – initially for the German-speaking region and other European countries, and then for markets outside of Europe in subsequent years. The goal is an annual production capacity of several thousand tons.

Supported by the European Innovation Council (EIC), the Austria Wirtschaftsservice (AWS), and the Austrian Center of Industrial Biotechnology (ACIB), we are integrated into a strong network of expertise. With our dedicated team of ten specialists from the fields of science, technology, and sales, we are continuously developing further product innovations, such as water storage-fertilizer combination products, biological mulch films, and agrochemical storage systems.

Our milestones

Graphic timeline of RETENTIS® development from 2020 to 2025: 2020 market readiness, 2021 patent filing, company founding and production start in the DACH region, 2022 approval as a soil improver in Austria with EU compliance and organic certification, 2023 completion of the industrial demo production plant, 2024 expansion to Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom and winning the Lower Austrian Export Award, 2025 completion of the industrial production plant.

AgroBiogel is located in the Zukunftspark+ in Tulln – a modern innovation center built on the revitalized site of the former Goldmann printing works. The Zukunftspark+ offers approximately 5,000 m² of office space and 20,000 m² of warehouse space and houses companies active in the fields of research, technology, and sustainable development.

The location in Zukunftspark+ enables AgroBiogel to collaborate closely with other innovative companies, universities, and startups. This environment promotes the exchange of ideas and supports the development of sustainable solutions.

Lower Austrian Export Prize 2024

On November 13, 2024, the Lower Austrian Export Prize was awarded in five categories at the Lower Austrian Export Forum at the WKNÖ – an award for outstanding achievements in international trade. We are delighted that AgroBiogel GmbH was honored in the "New Exporters" category.
