RETENTIS® in municipal use: the City of Amstetten reduces the watering effort for public green spaces
Well-kept green spaces, healthy urban trees and attractively designed traffic areas contribute significantly to the quality of life in towns and municipalities. At the same time, watering them reliably is becoming increasingly demanding due to longer dry periods, hot summer days and growing maintenance requirements.
The City of Amstetten in Lower Austria therefore relies on RETENTIS® from AgroBiogel. The soil water storage is used in many ways in the municipal sector: on traffic areas, in parks, on graves and around urban trees. The aim is to keep water and nutrients available in the root zone for longer and to better support the plants, especially during dry spells.
One solution for different municipal green spaces
Very different requirements come together in the municipal sector. Plantings on traffic areas are often exposed to strong sunlight and high temperatures. Parks are expected to look attractive even during dry summer months. Graves and seasonally planted areas require regular care, while urban trees need a stable water supply in the root zone over the long term.
RETENTIS® is worked directly into the soil or into the root zone of the plants. There, the material stores water and the nutrients dissolved in it. These are released to the plants again when needed. Especially on areas that dry out particularly quickly due to heat, wind and limited soil volume, this additional storage effect can make an important contribution to plant supply.
From three to two watering rounds per week
The City of Amstetten’s experience so far shows a concrete benefit for ongoing maintenance: previously, the areas concerned were usually watered three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
With RETENTIS®, the watering schedule could be reduced to two rounds per week. The Wednesday round can now be skipped. The plants continue to be supplied regularly, while one complete watering round per week is no longer needed.
This is particularly relevant for municipal services: every watering round saved reduces the organisational effort for staff, vehicles and irrigation equipment. At the same time, the available working time can be used more effectively for other important green space maintenance tasks.
More resilience in heat and drought
Today, urban greenery fulfils far more than a design function. Trees, parks and planted traffic areas provide shade, improve the microclimate and contribute to a pleasant cityscape. Especially in densely built-up areas, healthy green spaces are becoming increasingly important during summer heat waves.
At the same time, towns and municipalities face the challenge of maintaining their green spaces with limited resources. This is exactly where RETENTIS® comes in: the stored water stays in the soil for longer and is available where it is needed, directly in the root zone of the plants. This gives the plants better support between watering rounds.
Practical support for towns and municipalities
The example of the City of Amstetten shows how RETENTIS® can be used in different areas of municipal green space maintenance. From traffic areas to parks and graves to urban trees, different plantings benefit from an improved supply of water and nutrients in the soil.
Particularly valuable is the practical relief in everyday work: reducing the number of watering rounds from three to two per week creates additional leeway in the maintenance of public spaces. This saves resources and at the same time supports sustainable, future-oriented green space design.
