Green roof on a carport with RETENTIS®
In Project S, the roof of a carport was prepared for extensive greening. Green roofs create additional habitat, improve the local climate and can temporarily retain rainwater.
Because the substrate on a roof is only a limited layer and can dry out quickly in the sun, RETENTIS® was worked directly into the roof substrate. Depending on the area, about 200 to 500 grams of RETENTIS® per square metre were used.
Better water supply in the roof substrate
Green roofs are heavily exposed to sun, wind and changing weather conditions. RETENTIS® stores water in the substrate and releases it to the plants when needed. This keeps moisture available for longer in the rootable layer.
An even water supply is especially important during establishment. This applies in particular to greening from seed, as the young seedlings initially develop only a very fine root system.
Greening by sowing
The carport roof is planted from seed. After RETENTIS® was worked in, the substrate was prepared for sowing. This creates good conditions for the greenery to develop evenly.
Project S shows how RETENTIS® can also be used effectively on small roof areas. The improved water storage supports plant development and helps make green roofs more resilient to dry phases.
